According to the “Anglers Guide to the Lake District” by Holgate and Parkinson, “Ullswater cannot fail to impress the visiting angler. One of Cumbria’s most majestic lakes. To the angler Ullswater is best known these days for its trout fishing”.

Ullswater holds char, schelley,  perch, pike and brown trout.  The trout  season runs from 15th march to the 30th September.

An environment agency rod licence is required, which can be obtained from the Glenridding Tourist Information centre, which is in the main car park (see Helvellyn Cottage map). This licence entitles the holder to fish for non-migratory trout with a single rod and line or with up to two rods and line for freshwater coarse fish. No licence is required for children under 12.

Fishing in permitted from the shoreline where accessible. Fishing is also permitted from boats, which are available to hire from the following places:

St Patrick’s Boat Landing, Glenridding

Ullswater Marine, Watermillock

Lakeland boathire, Pooley Bridge

Glenridding Sailing Centre, Glenridding

Fishing Tackle is available from the St Patricks Boat Landing. Tree tops Cafe in Pooley Bridge has some tackle but no bait. There are also some specialist fishing shops in Penrith.

Fishing is also available locally at Brotherswater, Hayeswater, and for the more adventurous Angle Tarn and Red Tarn (which despite their altitude are full of small brown trout)  and Grisedale Tarn.

For more information please see the Lake District National Park site.
