Helvellyn Cottage is in an idyllic position above Glenridding and Ullswater and at the foot of the Helvellyn Lake District fells, including St Sunday Crag, Fairfield, Dollywagon Pike, Place Fell and High Street. Ullswater - ideal for sailing, kayaking, canoeing, or a lake cruise on the famous Ullswater Steamers to Howtown and Pooley Bridge.

It is located on the bridleway on the Greenside road above Glenridding. The cottage was built of lakeland stone in the 19th century as accommodation for workers at the Greenside slate and lead mine, which operated until the 1950s. The old mine is now the Helvellyn Youth Hostel. It retains many of the original features and the old wash sink shared by the cottages is still visible in the alley behind the cottages, and the old privies are still there as well  - although they now have fully functioning indoor facilities!
