Ullswater is often called England’s most beautiful lake, and anyone who has spent time here, whatever the time of year or season will soon see why. Framed as it is by Place Fell to the east and Helvellyn to the west, the lake is in stunning location and offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Lake District. The Lake can be seen in the valley below Helvellyn Cottages and is just a 15 minute walk away.

Activities on Ullswater

The famous Ullswater Steamers run their cruise boats from Glenridding to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. You can either come back on the Steamer or walk back from Howtown to Patterdale along the Lake Shore. Ullswater  is also very popular for sailing, kayaking, canoeing and even swimming. The Glenridding Sailing Centre hires dinghies and canoes as well as offering expert sailing tuition. You can also hire motor boats from St Patricks Boat Hire just outside Glenridding on the way to Patterdale.

Walking Around Ullswater

As well as Helvellyn itself, you can get some stunning panoramic views of Ullswater from the surrounding fells, including Place Fell to the east, and St Sunday Crag and Stybarrow Dodd in the west. The OL5 Ordnance Survey Map will provide your ideal walking companion. Please click here to see our favourite walks from Helvellyn Cottages.
